I wasn’t aware that the oft-displayed incompetence and profligacy of Bradford Council was contagious but the recent actions of Keighley Town Council have started to worry me.
Our civic centre now appears to be losing tens of thousands of pounds annually. A situation brought about by the actions of some well-intentioned councillors. Perhaps not exactly incompetence but more a lack of business acumen? More worrying though are the now nationally reported efforts of the Council to ban the filming of their meetings by members of the public.
Their initial, debatably Machiavellian, plan to employ a professional to film council meetings looked to be adding profligacy to their CV. but thankfully they appear to be backtracking on this idea. Not only will it waste more money but it will strengthen a growing belief that the council really has something to hide.
Some of our town councillors do sterling work. I have absolutely nothing but praise for Graham Mitchell and George Metcalf but the overall integrity of Keighley Town Council might now be seen to be in question.
Before it is too late I implore Keighley Town Council to scrap their obviously obstructive filming schemes, scrap their outdated standing orders and scrap their highly contrived filming protocols. I ask them instead to embrace transparent democracy. Let the people of Keighley observe and film whatever they wish. If there is nothing to hide there is nothing to fear.
Take this well-intentioned advice and the filming issue will be resolved at no cost to the people of Keighley.
JOE WOOLLARD Bogthorn, Keighley
