Ten Keighley-district hostelries are toasting inclusion in the latest edition of a top guide.

The Good Pub Guide, heralded as a pubgoers’ “bible”, features details of over 4,700 watering holes across the UK.

And listed in the “Also Worth a Visit in Yorkshire” section are the Old White Bear, Cross Hills; the George, in Cullingworth; the Busfeild Arms, East Morton; the Nightingale, Eastburn; the Boltmakers Arms and Cricketers, both Keighley; White Lion, Kildwick; the Grouse, Oakworth; the Dog & Gun, at Oxenhope, and the Old Silent, Stanbury.

All the pubs in the category are recommended and described by the public, and people can e-mail their own views to feedback@goodguides.com.

The guide, edited by Alisdair Aird and Fiona Stapley, issues a dire warning that up to 4,000 pubs could close in the next year but says those that maintain high standards will survive.

“This year – as so often before – we have found that poor service is the number one reason for writing off a pub,” said a spokesman.

“Landlords and landladies who motivate and inspire young staff are the driving force behind improving pub service standards in the UK.

“The pubs that will struggle are those at the bottom of the pecking order, which still behave as if we are stuck in the 1980s, happy with indifferent food, drink, service and surroundings. I do not know of one single good pub that has got into trouble in recent years.”

The Good Pub Guide gives county-by-county listings, each main entry having been inspected by the editors.

This year’s edition includes over 160 new entries.

“With regular feedback from 2,000 loyal and eagle-eyed correspondents – who look for real warmth and quality of service – it is the pubgoers’ recommendations, backed up by editor inspections, that determine who’s in and who’s out year on year,” added the spokesman.

The guide is published by Ebury Press and costs £15.99.
