Residents of an unadopted Silsden street have formed a community group to help their fight for vital repairs.

They hope that, as an official organisation, they might have more success finding money to make-up pot-holed Spencer Avenue.

Group members are calling on fellow residents of Spencer Avenue and surrounding streets to attend the next meeting, on Monday.

The Spencer Avenue Residents Group was set up with help from Bradford Council’s area co-ordinator’s office, and money secured by district councillor Andrew Mallinson.

Coun Mallinson has campaigned for several years for Spencer Avenue to be brought up to a standard where it can be taken on by Bradford Council.

He said: “The ideal thing would be to make-up the road to adoptable standard.

“Highways engineers have looked at the cost. The problem is the council has so many unadopted roads across the district and there just isn’t money for it.”

Coun Mallinson said the residents were currently looking at options for how repair work could be funded, but admitted: “There’s not much money out there for roads.

“I’ve asked the council to supply names of reputable contractors. The next thing is to look at how much the work could cost, either all the road or just some of it.”

Coun Mallinson said that repairing Spencer Avenue would benefit not only residents of its 35 houses, but those living in 200 nearby houses that were accessed via the avenue.

He added: “The road is peculiar because it’s concrete rather than asphalt. I think in the past a drain has leaked.

“In places the road has collapsed. The kerb edges have dropped away causing trip hazards.”

The Spencer Avenue Residents Group will meet on Monday, from 2pm to 4pm, at the King’s Arms in Silsden.
