Grant cash could fund a range of innovative projects as part of a new food-growing initiative in Keighley

Let’s Grow Keighley will be launched on October 7 with a public meeting to attract interest from people across the town.

But in advance of the meeting, organisers will apply for cash from Keighley funders and the Big Lottery.

The hope is more people will get involved if they know funding is available for specific activities.

District councillor Jan Smithies, one of the scheme’s leading lights, said there would be applications to the Community First funds covering Keighley West and Central wards.

She added: “We will need to be clear any work would be in the specific ward, such as a school putting up hanging baskets.

“There could also be courses showing people what they can grow in small spaces quickly. An application to the Big Lottery would be for a wider set of activities.”

Coun Smithies, who represents Keighley West, also suggested giving Incommunities tenants materials to grow fruit and vegetables.

She stressed Let’s Grow Keighley organisers did not want to decide everything in advance of the meeting because the plan was to attract ideas from the public.

The meeting is from 4pm to 5.30pm at Keighley Healthy Living Centre at 13 Scott Street.
