Shipley MP Philip Davies, whose constituency includes Cullingworth and Denholme, defied David Cameron over a controversial Bill to curb lobbying – describing it as a threat to democracy.
The MP was among just five Conservatives who voted against the second reading of the Transparency of Lobbying, Non-Party Campaigning and Trade Union Administration Bill.
The legislation has triggered an outcry from charities which have warned it will prevent them from speaking out against government policy.
The Electoral Commission fears it will have to order campaigning groups to shut down websites and cancel meetings if it suspects breaches.
Mr Davies said: “The Government is treating lobbying as if it is something disreputable, when it is an essential part of democracy.
“The government’s proposals are a direct threat to the freedoms of legitimate organisations.”
However, the Bill survived with a comfortable majority of 62 and will now go to a committee for more detailed debate.
