Silsden Amnesty Group has “adopted” a prisoner of conscience held in an Indonesian jail since 2005.
Former civil servant Filep Karma, sentenced to 15 years for his part in a peaceful demonstration, will be the focus of the group’s annual coffee morning this Saturday.
Visitors to the event – at Silsden Methodist Church – will be invited to sign a postcard to the Indonesian authorities, calling for Mr Karma’s immediate release.
He was arrested and subsequently charged with rebellion after joining 200 residents of the Indonesian province of Papua in a rally for independence.
A Silsden group spokesman said: “Amnesty International believes Filep Karma remains in jail for the principle of freedom of expression.
“In the coming year we will step up the campaign on his behalf, sending a stream of cards and letters and ensuring he is not a forgotten man.”
The coffee morning, from 9.30am to 11.45am, will also include displays and home-made cakes.
