Keighley came in for some stick during a gig in Bradford by top comedian Jason Manford.

But Keighlians in the audience at St George's Hall last Friday gave as good as they got from the Bradfordians.

The audience banter, sparked by Manford asking whether there was any friendly rivalry between local towns, continued through the show.

The light-hearted row followed comments made by Manford on Twitter on Friday while previewing the first of his two gigs in Bradford.

He had written: “Place called Keighley getting a bit of stick by the locals! Tried to google map it but it just says ‘There Be Dragons’.”

One member of Friday's audience told the Keighley News it appeared that the comedian sparked similar banter wherever he performed.

She said: “Keighley people were having a go at Bradford, Bradford people were having a go at Keighley.

“It was light-hearted. Jason didn’t say anything about Keighley himself, he said he couldn’t because he’d never been there.”

Manford’s Twitter comment about dragons attracted responses for and against Keighley from other Twitter users.

Jenna @phoenix_705 said: “You know you're in Bradford when they’re dissing Keighley”.

James Caine @Cainsey21 said: “Avoid Keighley like the plague, you're better off in a finer place called Haworth.”

Keighley was described as both the “boring outskirts of Bradford” and “the posh part of Bradford”. Most of the Twitter users, whether for or against Keighley, agreed they had loved Manford’s show.

Khadim Hussain, the Lord Mayor of Bradford and a Keighley councillor, said rivalry between city and town dated back to 1974 when Keighley became part of Bradford metropolitan district.

He said: “There may be issues but they are minor, and Keighley has given its fair share to the district. Keighley has its own heritage and it’s my job to put Keighley at the forefront internationally. I’m batting for Keighley as well as Bradford. As a district we have to show unity to prosper – nobody can touch us if we work together.”
