Organisations arranging activities for the Tour de France need to improve how they co-ordinate with each other, according to a parish councillor.

Coun David Ashcroft, of Oxenhope Parish Council, said he did not want to knock the enthusiasm being shown by people in the Keighley district.

“It’s great that we have this spontaneity,” he said. “But I feel that all the parties involved are not yet connected. It’s a bit scattergun and it feels like we’re knitting clouds at the moment.

“We need to balance people’s exciting ideas with the practicalities.”

He said even within Bradford Council, advance planning for the Tour meant officials were now having to forge relationships with council departments they have not worked with before.

He said it was important that people in Oxenhope looking forward to the Tour were able to enjoy the day, while inconvenience was minimised for residents less interested in the occasion.
