Pensioner activists in Keighley have called for “dementia-friendly communities” so that people with the condition feel confident enough to go out.
Keighley and Bradford Pensioner Association this week highlighted the problem of people with dementia feeling trapped in their own homes.
Research revealed that people with dementia felt let down by their communities, with almost half avoiding getting involved with local life.
An association spokesman said: “A dementia-friendly community is a town or village where people with dementia are understood, respected, supported, and confident they can contribute to community life.”
The Alzheimer's Society believes that such communities could save £11,000 per person each year by helping people with dementia to remain independent and stay out of care for longer.
