A 44-year-old Keighley woman has been given a curfew by Skipton magistrates after admitting stealing £37 of meat from Morrisons supermarket.

Paula Mary Cameron, whom the court heard was a former drug addict with a number of previous convictions and on a six-month conditional discharge, travelled to Skipton from Shipley with a friend to steal items to sell on.

She went into the store at 5.30pm on August 29 and was seen taking gammon steaks and a rib of beef from the fresh meat counter, putting it into a reusable bag before leaving without paying.

Cameron was followed to the car park and taken back into the store where she later admitted theft to police and returned the meat.

Cameron had been on drugs, had two young children who had been taken into care and had also suffered domestic violence, the court was told in mitigation.

Tahir Hanif said she was no longer taking methadone and was working on a voluntary basis in a Shipley charity shop. He added she was very sorry, but she had needed the money to live.

Cameron, of Church Street, was given a six-month community order with supervision and 15 days’ low-level activity. She will also be subject to a four-week curfew, from 8pm to 7am, and will have to pay £85 costs.
