The clock is ticking for a Worth Valley church... but not in a bad way!
The 140-year-old Haworth Parish Church clock is finally back in action after it stopped eight months ago.
This historic clock had been in good working order, but safety and insurance concerns meant volunteers were unable to gain access to its manual winding mechanism. As a result, the clock ground to a halt in January this year.
Church leaders explained a replacement ladder was required, as well as repairs to a wooden balustrade and a new perspex clock cover in place of a broken glass case.
The priest in charge at the church, the Rev Peter Mayo-Smith, confirmed last week these improvements had been completed.
He said: “It’s a pleasant shock to see the clock going again after so long.
“All the safety issues have been sorted out. It cost less than a thousand pounds and was done by a local company.
“I’m delighted with the standard of the work. The area around the clock is now in a much better state than it’s ever been before.”
Haworth resident and horologist Jens Hislop, who leads the church’s team of volunteer clock winders, said he was pleased to resume his duties.
Prior to the stoppage, the clock had been going “more or less full-time” since 1870.
