A Silsden pensioner ran a stall outside her house through the summer to raise money for road repairs.

Joan Brown sold items donated by neighbours to help pay the cost of filling potholes in unadopted Spencer Avenue.

She raised more than £700 standing by the table-top stall five days a week for three months.

The money, along with £1,000 of Bradford Council cash, has already funded the first repairs.

Joan, 76, and husband, Clifford, are among Spencer Avenue householders who recently formed a residents’ association to campaign for improvements.

Ward councillor Andrew Mallinson secured £1,500 to kick-start the group and pay for some repairs.

The long-term aim is to get Spencer Avenue, which consists of cracked and warped concrete, repaired and adopted by the council, as the local authority will not fund such work.

Joan said: “I’ve done five days a week outside my house, and some days I’d sit there all day for just £3. It’s because the weather has been so exceptional.”

It will cost many thousands to fully repair Spencer Avenue. Jean added: “Some of the residents are elderly ladies on their own and can’t afford to pay.”
