Just what is going on within Keighley Town Council? Each member must by now be aware of the crisis they face. Recent events calling for the internal auditor to tell them whether they are operating legally – reports the clerk finds vexatious – and now the deputy mayor’s resignation have left the council in further disarray. The people of the town are now left in an invidious position. Either they pay a large sum in order to hold an election or the council co-opts someone who is not chosen by the people.
My advice to anyone thinking of standing for election or accepting a co-option is think long and hard before joining an organisation that is already considered by our MP as ‘dysfunctional’.
Do you really want to be a member of a council that continues to allow the civic centre to run up massive deficits, leaching money from the people of Keighley?
The workings of this council have forced us into these two stark choices – pay for an election or allow the council to choose its own member. Elizabeth Mitchell Clough Fold, Keighley
