A call has gone out for people to help celebrate neighbours who make life in their community a better place.
Housing group Incommunities has asked for nominations for its annual Gerry Pickersgill Award, which celebrates local heroes with plenty of community pride.
The award is named after former Keighley area housing manager Mr Pickersgill, a hugely popular figure in the town who died in 2000.
It is open to any housing association tenant or leaseholder, as well as private rented tenants right across the district – this covers people making nominations and nominees.
Previous winners have been nominated for helping their elderly neighbours, setting up community groups and luncheon clubs, and organising Neighbourhood Watch schemes.
Last year, 30 people and groups from across Bradford district were nominated. All nominees will be invited to an awards ceremony on November 12 at Octagon Live in Sandbeds.
Alex Brown, from the District Federation, said: “The 2013 award event promises to be bigger than ever, as the search for your ‘local hero’ is opened up to social housing and private tenants across the district.
“If you know someone who you think is extra special, then get in touch.”
Incommunities group chief executive, Geraldine Howley, said: “Every year, the Gerry Pickersgill Award celebrates those housing tenants who give countless hours to improving other people’s lives.
“We want to honour the inspiring work that goes on in neighbourhoods.
“Why not make the person you know who works so hard feel special by nominating them for this fabulous local award?”
Contact Craig Berry on 01274 254749 or via craig.berry@incommunities.co.uk to make a nomination, including details of the nominee and why they should win. The closing date for entries is October 23. Nomination forms will shortly be available from Incommunities’ offices.
