A Keighley support group is offering free advice for disabled people applying for the new Personal Independence Payment.

People First Keighley and Craven will guide people through the long and complex application form for the benefit.

The charity’s workers have been given specialist training on the claims process by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).

Personal Independence Payments, or PIPs, have replaced the Disability Living Allowance (DLA) for anyone making new applications. Most people currently receiving DLA will have to apply for PIPs from 2015 onwards.

People First is run by people with learning disabilities, along with support workers, and provides advice, campaigning, social activities and work experience.

Carol Jones, from People First, said: “It’s quite a complicated process and it’s a long form – it’s quite daunting, especially if you haven’t got family to help you.

“People can come in and phone the DWP from here. We can help people through the whole process.”

Carol said that People First staff could also accompany applicants to meetings regarding their claim, or help them appeal if they are turned down.
