The venue for the launch of Let’s Grow Keighley has been moved due to huge interest from residents and groups.

Central Hall in Alice Street has now been booked for Monday’s public meeting.

Let’s Grow Keighley is a wide-ranging initiative that aims to boost the local economy and create jobs through environmental projects.

Key themes include growing food on unused urban land, developing a food market for home-based growers and starting small businesses in woodland.

Monday’s meeting, from 4pm to 5.30pm, will allow people to join the project and suggest ideas.

Councillor Jan Smithies, one of the leading lights behind the scheme, said Let’s Grow Keighley could be an umbrella for lots of projects.

She added: “We’re looking at local growing of food, from people in their own backyards to others working with farmers on new crops.

“There’s also the idea of using woodland, from growing wild food to coppicing.”

Let’s Grow Keighley involves several environmentally-themed groups, including Transition Keighley and Co-operative members.

Suggested projects have included tree planting, charcoal making, rearing animals, manufacturing jam and the sourcing of biomass for alternative energy. Coun Smithies said anyone interested in joining, but who can’t attend the meeting, should contact her on 07947 139066.
