Manorlands is opening up its doors to the public later this month.

The Oxenhope Sue Ryder hospice is inviting people to visit the Hebden Road centre to glimpse what’s on offer.

Although labelled a tea party, the event – on October 11 – will feature a whole lot more.

People will be able to learn about the invaluable services provided at the hospice and in the community.

Consultant, Mike Hughes, will give a talk, and the relative of a former patient will speak about his family’s experiences.

The wide range of volunteer roles and opportunities to support fundraising at Manorlands will be outlined (see below for further details).

There will also be information for carers, a complementary therapy taster stand and details of planning ahead.

Tea and cakes will be served.

The free drop-in event, between 10am and 3pm, is being held as part of Hospice Care Week.

Sarah Bottomley, head of care at Manor-lands, hopes the tea party will help dispel some myths.

“We want to let people know what we do – and how they can help – and break down barriers,” said Mrs Bottomley, who spent two-and-a-half years as ward manager before being appointed, initially on an acting basis, to her present role.

“A lot of people still don’t really know what goes on at the hospice. They imagine we just sit and hold people’s hands and mop their brows. Yes, there may be some of that, but there’s an incredible amount more, and this is a chance for the public to see that and to get involved, if they wish.

“There are many things we are getting off the ground, like carers’ days, and we have hundreds of volunteer roles available.

“We would encourage as many people as possible to come along.”
