War veteran Walter Evans is a class act.
The 92-year-old helps out each day in the classrooms at Glusburn Community Primary School.
“We believe he’s the oldest voluntary teaching assistant in the country,” said headteacher Richard Hunt.
“He usually arrives before staff each morning and often prepares them a hot drink. In class, Walter works alongside pupils offering support across a range of subjects, in particular art, where he excels!
“He is treasured by staff and adored by pupils.”
Walter was a tank driver with the 4/7 Royal Dragoon Guards during the Second World War. He was present at the Normandy landings on the coast of Arromanches, in north-western France, on D-Day, June 6, 1944, when he drove a bridging tank.
Mr Hunt said Walter’s experiences enhanced history lessons at the school.
“He is a legend – a gentleman, a courageous soldier and a committed member of the staff team,” he added.
Walter said he missed school when it closed for holidays and couldn’t wait to return to work.
