An historic Keighley steam locomotive has been granted iconic status by a leading engineers’ body.
The Institution of Mechan-ical Engineers has given the Webb Coal Tank No 1054 a prestigious Engineering Heritage Award.
The loco now stands alongside the E-Type Jaguar, Tower Bridge and the Vulcan bomber as an iconic feat of British engineering.
Volunteers who restored the engine will receive the award on Saturday at the Ingrow Loco Museum.
The Coal Tank regularly runs on the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway, as well as visiting other heritage railways around the UK.
First introduced in 1888, the loco is the last remaining engine of its type anywhere in the world, and is maintained by the Keighley-based Bahamas Locomotive Society.
Professor Isobel Pollock, immediate past president of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, will present the award.
She said: “This Engineering Heritage Award celebrates both the locomotive and the fantastic work undertaken to preserve it.
“The Webb Coal Tank No 1054 is a fine example of the innovative engineering that happened in the UK during the Victorian era.”
