A veil of secrecy has enveloped one of our district schools. It has come to light this week a second inquiry has been launched at Long Lee Primary in the wake of a probe last year into its Sats results.

But there is a wholesale reluctance among Bradford Council education bosses, the school and its governors to shed light on exactly what is going on, leaving parents and the wider community in the dark.

Even our elected representatives have been unable to glean information.

Schools, by their very nature, are public bodies. There must be some accountability to the electorate, and when things are amiss, people have a right to know what is happening.

It is nothing short of a farce that the council refuses to even confirm the status of the headteacher, despite repeated requests to do so.

We accept sensitive personal information should remain private, but this cannot be used as a blanket excuse to fob off legitimate enquiries.

And the more the powers-that-be are reluctant to explain what’s going on, the more the public will suspect there is something to hide.
