So... are we a “Christian Country”, as David Cameron has recently declared?

Some people have suggested his comments are a cynical move to win back votes from UKIP.

Others have questioned what they perceive as his lack of Christian care for the poor.

Whatever your view, what is the truth? Is Britain a Christian country?

According to the BBC news website: Hindu Council UK said it was “very comfortable” with the description.

The Muslim Council of Britain said the UK was a largely Christian country.

Human rights campaigners wrote an open letter claiming that surveys suggest less than 30 per cent have any belief in God.

However the most reliable figures come from the national census, which says that 59 per cent consider themselves Christian.

But what about you? What do you believe? Does it matter?

In the last couple of weeks I have prayed with two patients who were in the last hours before their death.

One had a strong Christian faith, the other none.

What surprises me, though, is that I meet people who are happy not to think about these things. Things that surely matter a great deal.

CS Lewis famously said: “Christianity, if false, is of no importance, and if true, of infinite importance.

The only thing it cannot be is moderately important.”

So... what do you think?
