TODAY is a very special day for the Picture House as it turns 105 years old!
The cinema first opened its doors on Saturday May 10, 1913, by the manufacturers Dean, Smith & Grace, and was the first purpose-built cinema in Keighley!
During its early years it hosted live variety events with performers such as the Arcadian Players from Morecambe.
In the 1950s the Picture House was purchased by the Essoldo chain thus losing its ‘Picture House’ name; eventually Essoldo was absorbed by the Classic chain in the 1970s and subsequently its name was changed again.
It was during this time the cinema was twinned and became a two-screen cinema! Eventually the Classic chain went bankrupt and the cinema was taken over by a small co-operative venture which gave it back its original name.
The Picture House unfortunately had a brief closure until it was rescued by the current proprietor Charles Morris.
It is wonderful to be a part of this beautiful cinema and it’s arguably the heart of film in Keighley. So let us hope for many more birthdays to come!
Saoirse Ronan’s next feature, since her Academy Award nomination and Golden Globe win for best actress for her role in Ladybird, is On Chesil Beach (15).
This film is released in the UK on May 15.
It is set in 1962 when newlyweds Edward and Florence, both in their early 20s and also both virgins, spend their honeymoon preoccupied and terrified by the upcoming consummation of their marriage.
On Chesil Beach is based on the 2007 story by British writer Ian McEwan, which was selected for the 2007 Booker Prize shortlist.
I look forward to seeing if Saoirse Ronan can bag more awards with her performance in this one.
Sherlock Gnomes (U) is set for release on Friday May 11, and following its preview last weekend I’m sure we will see many more of you over the next few weeks.
If you loved Gnomeo & Juliet then I’m positive this one will be just as full of laughs and family entertainment.
After a string of garden gnome disappearances in London, Gnomeo & Juliet look to legendary detective Sherlock Gnomes to solve the case of their missing friends and family.
To be honest it seems like a never-ending Christmas when it comes to Marvel films this year: with Deadpool 2 (15) released on Tuesday May 15 you won’t have to wait long for more of the talkative antihero!
In this next instalment after surviving a near fatal bovine attack, the disfigured cafeteria chef and wisecracking mercenary Wade Wilson/Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds).
He struggles to fulfill his dream of becoming Mayberry’s hottest bartender while also learning to cope with his lost sense of taste.
Searching to regain his spice for life, as well as a flux capacitor, Deadpool must battle ninjas, the Yakuza, and a pack of sexually-aggressive canines.
He journeys around the world to discover the importance of family, friendship and flavour, finding a new taste for adventure and earning the coveted coffee mug title of World’s Best Lover.
I doubt you need much convincing about this one but if you do, just watch the trailer, as this looks awesome!
