WITH JANUARY almost over and the awards season upon us there are still some great films on their way just in time for this year’s Academy Awards.
Released on January 25, Vice (15) has already achieved six nominations and one win at the golden Globe Awards and another eight nominations for the Academy Awards (including Best Picture).
This award-winning political drama is one that should not be missed!
This film documents the rise of Governor George W Bush of Texas who picks Dick Cheney, the CEO of Halliburton Co, to be his Republican running-mate in the 2000 presidential election.
No stranger to politics, Cheney’s impressive résumé includes stints as White House chief of staff, House Minority Whip and defence secretary.
When Bush wins by only a narrow margin, Cheney begins to use his newfound power in order to help reshape the country and the world.
Staying on the topic of award-winning films, winner of three Golden Globes in addition to being nominated for five Oscars, is the profoundly moving Green Book (12a) which will be one of the first films to hit the screens this February.
It is 1962, and Dr Don Shirley is a world-class African-American pianist who is about to embark on a concert tour in the Deep South.
In need of a driver and protection, Shirley recruits Tony Lip, a tough-talking bouncer from an Italian-American neighbourhood in the Bronx.
Despite their differences, the two men soon develop an unexpected bond while confronting racism and danger in an era of segregation.
Now we haven’t forgotten the little ones this month at the Picture House.
So the next film in the How to Train Your Dragon series is How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (PG) which will be flying its way in to cinemas this February!
Following the previous two films, Hiccup is now chief and ruler of Berk alongside Astrid, and he has created a gloriously chaotic dragon utopia.
When the sudden appearance of female Light Fury coincides with the darkest threat their village has ever faced, Hiccup and Toothless must leave the only home they’ve known and journey to a hidden world thought only to exist in myth.
As their true destines are revealed, dragon and rider will fight together – to the very ends of the Earth – to protect everything they’ve grown to treasure.
Melissa McCarthy’s next role is alongside Richard E Grant (another Golden Globe and Oscar nominee) in Can You Ever Forgive Me (15).
McCarthy stars as Lee Israel, the bestselling celebrity biographer (and cat lover) who made her living in the 70s and 80s profiling the likes of Katherine Hepburn, Tallulah Bankhead, Estée Lauder and journalist Dorothy Kilgallen.
When Lee found herself unable to get published because she had fallen out of step with the marketplace, she turns her art form to deception, abetted by her loyal friend Jack, played in this film by Richard E Grant.
Can You Ever Forgive Me was released in the UK on February 1, so there’s plenty of choice for everyone over the next few weeks!
