WITH THE end of the awards season we focus on the next lot of films heading our way this spring. We start off with Fisherman’s Friends (12a) which is released on March 14.
In this movie a fast-living, cynical London music executive reluctantly heads to Cornwall on a colleague’s stag weekend where he is pranked by his boss into trying to sign a group of shanty singing fishermen. He becomes the ultimate ‘fish out of water’ struggling to gain the respect or enthusiasm of the unlikely boy-band, who value friendship and community over fame and fortune.
Attempting to overcome the fishermen’s scepticism about the music business, he finds himself drawn into the community, has his integrity tested, and ultimately is shown the meaning of loyalty, love and friendship. This forces him to re-evaluate what really matters in life; ultimately giving him the chance of a different kind of success.
Released the same week is What Men Want (15), an American fantasy comedy film directed by Adam Shankman. A loose remake of the 2000 film What Women Want, the plot follows sports agent Ali Davis who passed up for a well-deserved promotion, and wonders what else she needs to do to succeed in a man’s world.
Hoping to find answers from a psychic, Ali drinks a weird concoction that suddenly allows her to hear what men are thinking. Using her newfound ability, Ali starts to turn the tables on her obnoxious male colleagues while racing to sign the next basketball superstar.
The next film from Blumhouse Productions, who have produced horror greats such as The Purge, Paranormal Activity, Insidious and more recently Glass, returns with its next psychological horror Us (certificate to be confirmed) creeping its way into the Cinema on March 22. If you’re into horror movies then this one should be just for you.
Accompanied by her husband, son and daughter, Adelaide Wilson returns to the beachfront home where she grew up as a child. Haunted by a traumatic experience from the past, Adelaide grows increasingly concerned that something bad is going to happen to her family.
Her worst fears soon become a reality when four masked strangers descend upon the house, forcing the Wilsons into a fight for survival.
