ON-street trading took place in Keighley, around the Church Green area, for 500 years before the establishment of a formal market in 1833.

The market was situated at the west end of Low Street. This area was redeveloped in the late 1960s and a purpose-built covered market hall was constructed. Meantime, a temporary market was established on the Church Green car park.

The new building was opened by Keighley town mayor Sydney Bancroft in June, 1971. It included a piece of sculpture at the entrance, designed by 17-year-old Greenhead School pupil Angela Pettit, which was created to represent the energy and mechanical power of the town.

An arched entranceway was added to the market hall in early 2009.
