KEIGHLEY’S Girlguiding movement turned out in force today for its annual Thinking Day celebration.
Members took part in a parade and packed into Keighley Shared Church for a service.
The parade, between Town Hall Square and the church, was led by the City of Bradford Pipe Band.
Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and leaders all took part in the celebration.
Guests at the service included Deputy Lieutenant of West Yorkshire David Pearson, Keighley MP Robbie Moore, Lord Mayor of Bradford Councillor Doreen Lee, town mayor Councillor Peter Corkindale, Scouts district commissioner Jeanette Young and Girlguiding county and division representatives.
A welcome was given by Deacon Jackie Fowler, who said she was delighted to have everyone there.
She added that she’d been a Brownie, Guide, Queen’s Guide and then a leader herself.
Several awards were presented.
The Sarah Robinson Award – given annually for an outstanding contribution to Girlguiding in Keighley – was presented to Amanda Dowden, of 2nd Silsden Brownies.
She has held various roles over more than three decades.
Division president Mrs Margaret Bailey, who made the presentation, said she’d first known her as a young leader – she’d gone on to posts including district commissioner and served on the county outdoor team.
A number of long-service awards were also handed out, ranging from five years to 40.
Members of Keighley East district gave a presentation, World Thinking Day 2020 Living Threads.
It spotlighted 12 inspirational female figures – first Chief Guide for Britain Lady Olave Baden-Powell, retired boxer Nicola Adams, young skateboarder Sky Brown, paralympian athlete Libby Clegg, paralympic skier Menna Fitzpatrick, broadcaster Nikki Fox, paralympian swimmer Ellie Simmonds, wheelchair racer Hannah Cockcroft, Lothersdale paralympic archery champion Danielle Brown, teenage environmental activist Greta Thunberg, murdered Batley & Spen MP Jo Cox and the Queen.
The service also included a Sing a Rainbow presentation.
And all members of the movement renewed their promises.
A collection taken during the service will be split between the Shared Church and Bradford Disability Sport and Leisure.
