THE YORKSHIRE Party has hit out at Boris Johnson after his comments about devolution.
Party leader, Bob Buxton, who lives in Rawdon, said: “The Prime Minister’s remarks about devolution being a disaster north of the border show his true attitudes and fears – he believes Yorkshire wouldn’t vote Tory and so he hogs the power in London.”
“Mayors cannot deliver real devolution – no matter how well intentioned mayors might be – because they have few real powers and no funding. If you have to go cap in hand to the treasury to fund your policies, it’s not devolution. Besides, much of their legal powers are actually taken from the councils beneath them – it’s not devolution if powers are becoming less localised.”
“The Yorkshire Party remains committed to bringing powers down from Westminster to a Yorkshire Regional Parliament, with powers and funding similar to Scotland, and with small district councils beneath it for the most local issues.”
