PLANNED changes aimed at improving safety on a busy main road when a new housing scheme is built may not go far enough, it is feared.

Bradford Council is proposing to extend the 30mph zone up Bolton Road, Silsden, to include the frontage of the development. And it’s planned to create a 40mph ‘buffer zone’ between that and where the national speed limit applies.

“I’m worried that this may not go far enough to ensure highway safety when vehicles access and egress the new housing development to be built above Tannery Corner,” said Craven ward district councillor, Rebecca Whitaker.

“Traffic travels along this road at great speed and drivers must be alerted in good time about the entrance to this new development.”

She said ward councillors had been liaising with highways officers over the issue.

“Highways has explained that other considerations need to be factored in and there may be difficulties reducing speed limits into a non-populated rural section of road,” said Cllr Whitaker.

“As well as a buffer zone it’s also very important that street lighting is extended up Bolton Road so that this new entrance to the housing development is adequately lit for the safety of everyone. I would encourage anyone who wishes to feed into the consultation to do so by April 2.”
