A CARE home has achieved coveted recognition for its work supporting people with dementia.

Springbank, at Silsden, has received a Dementia Friendly Keighley recognition award after completing a number of measures.

Several staff members have become ‘dementia champions’ and will deliver sessions to colleagues, residents’ families and businesses in the area.

A proportion of the 40 bedrooms at the Howden Road home are specifically for people living with dementia.

And there is a dedicated area for residents with the condition and their families.

Once Covid restrictions are further eased, the area will be used by Dementia Friendly Keighley to host events and provide information and signposting to people in the community.

Alex Lambert, registered manager at Springbank, said: “We are honoured to partner with Dementia Friendly Keighley. It has already provided invaluable support and information to help us offer the very best care we can for our residents.

“We look forward to welcoming Dementia Friendly Keighley into our home when restrictions allow, so it can provide vital support for families in the local community.”

Springbank director, Steven Spellman, said: “We’ve operated care homes in the area for over 30 years and we are passionate about providing high-quality care – Dementia Friendly Keighley helps support us to do this.

“With investment in a new dementia community at Springbank, Primrose, we are continually improving the care we provide.

“We look forward to welcoming everyone back to our home once we are able to.”

Hannah Lindsey, projects advisor at Dementia Friendly Keighley, pays tribute to the home’s work around dementia.

“We would like to thank Springbank for its very detailed action plan and look forward to working with the home to put the actions in place," she said.

“The home has given much consideration to its residents and staff and to prioritising its work in supporting the local community.”

Dementia Friendly Keighley is urging other businesses and organisations to pledge to do what they can to support people with the condition.

A spokesman said: “By pledging to become more dementia-friendly they can help people with dementia, their carers and families have better access to services and support and be more fully integrated in their communities. We believe that by engaging with and supporting more organisations to take-up the challenge, we will be able to make Keighley a more dementia-friendly place to live and work.”
