Sheepdog trials in Oakworth raised a record amount for charity.

More than 50 dogs and their owners took part in the New Year's Day contest at Moor Lodge Farm. The event has been running since 1991 and this year raised £2,450 for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

The trials were organised by Carol and Albert Mellin and their 13-year-old son, Philip. Mrs Mellin said over the last six years the competition has collected more than £9,380 for the air ambulance.

Tuesday's event also featured an auction and a raffle and Mrs Mellin thanked everyone who donated nearly 150 auction items and raffle prizes.

"This couldn't have been done without the support of so many friends and local people," she said.

"It was a hugely successful day which was a lot of fun and generated a great atmosphere."

She paid special tribute to Ernest Ellison, of Stanbury, who sold many of the raffle tickets, Down to Earth caterers, which supplied food on the day, and Jeremy Eaton, who ran the auction.

The trials were judged by last year's winner Jim Cropper, who has appeared on the popular long-running BBC programme "One Man and His Dog".

In the nursery class, Stephen Duckworth, of Haslingden, came first with his dog Spy. The pair managed 77 points out of 90. In second place, with 76 points, was Tom Lawrenson, from Brindle, with Clyde. Third place went to Alf Kyme, of Stacksteads. He and Moss collected 74 points.

There were three prize winners in the novice category. Keith Salisbury and Scott were first with 79 points. Enid Moore and Roy, of Oxenhope, came second with 75 points. In third place were Bill Heslop and Bee, from Baxendall, with 68 points.
