Ram-raiders smashed their way into Oxenhope Co-op today and stole a cash machine.

Shocked staff members turning up for work were faced with a scene of devastation at the Co-operative Late Shop in Station Road, following the 4.50am raid.

The thieves targeted the cash point inside the building, which they attached with a chain to a Toyota Rav4 estate car stolen earlier in the night.

As they drove away, the cash point detached from the building and was dragged down Denholme Road, colliding with a few parked cars before the chain finally snapped.

The cash point and stolen Toyota were then abandoned and the driver made off in a large black get-away car.

Although the thieves escaped with no money, the entrance to the Co-op and interior was left in tatters.

Det Insp Peter Craig, of Keighley CID, said: "There is massive damage to the Co-op in Oxenhope but the ATM machine and all the cash has been recovered.

"We are currently viewing CCTV footage."

He appealed to anybody who might have seen the stolen car being driven between Bingley and Oxenhope between 10.30pm yesterday and 4.50am today to come forward.

He said: "The vehicle was stolen in a burglary from Swan Avenue in Eldwick, Bingley, at 10.30pm yesterday.

"It was a black Toyota Rav4 estate car, registered CF04 HYP.

"Someone must have seen that vehicle driving around and we would be interested in hearing from you."

DI Craig stressed that the car, which has extensive damage to its rear, has now been recovered.

A spokesman for the Co-operative confirmed that the store doorframe, shutters, fixtures and fittings had been damaged in the raid, but no staff were on the premises because the shop was closed at the time.

He said: "The store will be closed while repairs are made, however, we expect it will be business as usual from later today.

"Our sincere apologies to our customers for any inconvenience this may cause."

Anyone who saw the black Toyota Rav 4 should call Keighley Police on 01535 617085.
