Worth Valley Young Farmers achieved a crop of successes in a public speaking competition.

The contest, at Harrogate, was open to Young Farmers Club members from across Yorkshire.

And top of the Worth Valley crop was club secretary Kath Wood, who won the coveted award for a ten-minue speech.

She had qualified for the county finals after winning a Craven district contest in October.

Her choice of subject was "The First Chinese Young Farmer", about the positive effect that former member Jacky Wang had on the club during his two years with it.

Kath, who was also victorious in the senior after-dinner speaking competition, said: "It is my last year as a competitive member and it is nice to have this success. Public speaking is an important part of the YFC movement and it's a great skill our members learn."

Also successful in the contest were Sarah Shires and Alex Binns, who were placed second and third respectively in the junior six-minute speech competition. And Michael and Rachel Moore were first in the intermediate "Brainstrust" competition, helping Craven win the overall district trophy.
