"Secret agents" have targeted shoppers in Keighley.

For more than a month during the festive period, unsuspecting shoppers were approached and handed a free gift voucher to use at a Keighley business.

The lucky shopper was then invited to visit the store concerned and collect a prize.

Keighley Town Centre Association (KTCA) was in charge of the operation, which it ran to add some festive cheer to the area and promote town's businesses. Flat screen televisions and adult bicycles were among some of the thousands of pounds worth of prizes handed out.

Town centre manager Philip Smith said the Christmas Freebies campaign had been a cracker.

He said: "It ran right across Keighley on Saturdays, Sundays and late night shopping on Thursdays from November 22.

"I think we did manage to put some festive cheer into Keighley - the numbers of people walking around with happy, smiling faces proved that."

More than 50 businesses are members of KTCA and they all took part in the prize give-away.

Other festive events in Keighley included a "grab it" booth, run by the Pulse radio station, giving shoppers a chance to grab themselves a Christmas present, and the Keighley Cougars helped to hand out fliers promoting the freebie give-away.

Mr Smith added: "The support we have received from the businesses providing prizes is fantastic - so far they have given over £3,000."
