Government watchdogs will this month make an in-depth inspection of Park Lane College Keighley.

The visit will be the first full Ofsted inspection since a damning report almost two years ago.

Achievement, standards, leadership and management were then branded "inadequate".

A Government troubleshooter was appointed to oversee a package of improvement measures.

Since the February 2006 inspection the college has merged with Park Lane College Leeds.

An Ofsted inspector made a "monitoring" visit to the college two months ago in advance of the full inspection.

After studying data provided by the college he said reasonable progress had been made in several areas.

These included success rates, quality provision, leadership and management, effectiveness of merger and governance.

The inspector said good progress had been made in improving achievement and standards. These included a 17 per cent improvement for 16 to 18-year-olds taking long courses at level 1.

Students' success rates had improved substantially, partic-ularly in health, public services, construction, information tech-nology, arts and media.

The inspector also highlighted improvements to the Harold Town annexe, off Dalton Lane, and the development of an e-learning suite.

Closer monitoring of attendance had helped retain more students and teachers were now more aware of individual students' course progress.

The inspector said the merger of the two colleges had been completed swiftly and effectively.
