Friends of a schoolgirl who died in a road accident are planning to remember her in a special way.

Amy Howard's pals hope to raise enough money to buy a flowering tree or get her favourite band, McFly, to turn on Christmas lights. Among those fundraising is Sophie Whitrick, 13, from Sutton, whose dad Nick shaved off his hair and 25-year-old beard for the cause. "It was a really cool thing for him to do - he does look quite funny now as he looks so different," said Sophie.

She added that they wanted to raise as much money as possible for some form of memorial to Amy, from Addingham, who died aged 12 following a road accident with a car in the village, in December 2006.

More than £800 has already been coined in. The friends have been selling pink reflective hearts for £2 each at their school, Skipton Girls' High.
