The transformation of the former Keighley Disabled People's Centre has been highlighted by councillors.

Keighley Area Committee heard how the renamed Temple Row Centre will in future serve the entire community.

Many activities will bring disabled people firmly into the mainstream and help influence local decision-making.

The volunteer management group which runs the centre is being given administrative and financial support by area committee staff.

Activity programmes are being developed for the whole community, as well as specifically for disabled people.

The centre, which has full disabled access, will also host events.

People with special needs will also be given support so they can become community volunteers.

A lunchtime café is open to everyone and the centre will be a base for Bradford Disability Sport and Leisure.

It will also become the main base for the area committee's new £32,000 "Mainstreaming Disability" project.

Mainstreaming Disability aims to change perceptions and attitudes among the wider population across Keighley.

Disabled people would gain a greater voice in local decision-making and get more involved in mainstream groups, activities and services.

The extra activities follow major refurbishments carried out last summer by volunteers, including new toilets, catering and activity spaces.

The area committee, which met last week, heard the management committee would still need support. It was told there was a "genuine need" for confidence-building and behind-the-scenes work.
