Two streets at a housing development planned for the former Brontë Middle School site will be named after ex-teachers there.

One-time pupils at the school will have the chance to vote for their choice from a shortlist of candidates.

The venture will also raise money for Manorlands, the Oxenhope Sue Ryder Care hospice. People will make a donation as they vote.

Behind the project are Manorlands and the Worth Valley Young Farmers Club, which worked together last April to stage two reunion-style discos at the Brontë site, in Oakworth Road, Keighley.

The hugely successful events were attended by more than 950 former pupils and teachers and raised more than £7,000 for Manorlands.

Andrew Wood, a fundraiser at the hospice, said: "There was so much respect and admiration shown by the former pupils towards the teachers that it seemed fitting to try to leave a lasting legacy to them on the site in the form of street names.

"Bradford Council and Keighley Town Council have been very supportive and Persimmon Homes, the company that will build on the site, has even promised to match fund the total raised."

Teachers shortlisted by former pupils are currently being contacted to see if they are willing to be part of the contest. The names of the two winning teachers will be announced at another reunion-style Brontë disco, to be held at Oakbank School on April 5. Tickets for that event will go on sale next month.
