HERE is the latest super selection of photos giving a snapshot of life around Keighley four decades ago – in January, 1982.

The pictures are from a collection of images that Keighley and District Local History Society acquired last summer.

Thousands of black-and-white negatives, actually shot by the Keighley News in the early 1980s, were obtained.

The society has been scanning and labelling them and posting the images on its social media and Flickr sites.

Over 400 images from this month 40 years ago are now available to view at flickr.com/keighleyhistory.

More will be added as the society works its way through the scanning.

Tim Neal, the society's archivist, said: "It looks like January, 1982, got off to a cold and wet start – with floods in the Aire Valley and frozen water pipes in Haworth. The conditions even caused problems for stallholders in Keighley’s indoor market.

"Panto season was in full swing, including Geoffrey Rundle and Keith Marsden performing together for the 25th time in Keighley Amateurs’ production of Aladdin.

"Many fundraising activities were undertaken, including sponsored walks and stamp collecting. Some of these activities took place in pubs that have long since closed, such as the Knowle Arms in Bracken Bank and The Gardeners Arms on Hanover Street."

The negatives had been on quite a journey before they ended-up back in Keighley – they were bought by the society from an Oakworth postcard dealer, who himself had acquired them from someone in Scarborough.

Mr Neal added: "I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw two shoeboxes of negatives that we were being offered.

"They are a wonderful snapshot of life in the town and the surrounding villages 40 years ago. I’m hoping they stir a lot of memories for people."

The negatives came in small envelopes and with only basic labelling and a date.

They feature a huge range of topics and events, including sporting fixtures, weddings, shows and galas, theatre productions, political activities and charity functions.

In total, Keighley and District Local History Society has more than 14,000 images of people, places, objects and publications to view on its Flickr site.

Its collection also includes a selection of colour slides of Keighley dating from the 1950s, found on eBay late last year.
