The search is on for Keighley's unsung heroes.

The Keighley News is joining forces with Bradford Council's Keighley Area Committee to recognise the unstinting work of volunteers in our communities.

Groups and individuals can be nominated for an award, a Community Star.

"There are so many people in the Keighley area who work hard for the local community and deserve to be given recognition for what they do," said Councillor Glen Miller, chairman of Keighley Area Committee.

"This new scheme is a fantastic way of saying thank you."

Keighley News editor Malcolm Hoddy said "I had absolutely no hesitation in putting the name of the paper to this scheme. I know there are many people in our communities who richly deserve public recognition for their efforts."

The awards are split into six categories: * Contribution to making communities safer - for individuals or a group who have worked to identify and deal with the causes and consequences of crime or anti-social behaviour, for example neighbourhood watch organisers * Contribution to the environment - for individuals or groups who have worked or campaigned to protect the environment or promoted environmentally responsible attitudes and behaviour, for example organising a clean-up * Sporting achievement - for individuals or a group who have achieved sporting success or who dedicate their own (unpaid) time to coaching or organising sports events and activities, for example coaches or stewards who give their time voluntarily * Good neighbour - a chance to pay tribute to someone special, either an adult or young person, whose kindness has made a real difference to someone's life * Community Star (senior category, age 25-plus) - for individuals who give time and effort for the benefit of others and who have helped improve the amenities and resources in their community, for example organisers of community activities and events * Community Star (youth category, age 13-25) - a young person who demonstrates a positive contribution to their community and promotes a positive image for young people across the area, for example involvement in fundraising or community work.
