A "bounced" direct debit payment and last year's postal strike led to a 22-year-old man's conviction for driving without insurance, a court heard.
Robert David Slinger was stopped in the early hours of August 28, 2007 after appearing to avoid a police patrol.
When officers caught up with him in the car park of Skipton's Morrisons' supermarket, a check on the Police National Computer revealed that Slinger was uninsured.
In a letter to Skipton Magistrates' Court last Friday, the accused pleaded guilty and said his insurance company had cancelled his policy due to a missed direct debit payment the day before he was stopped.
However, he said he did not receive a letter informing him of the situation until the following week due to the postal strike.
Slinger, of Moorview Grove, Keighley, was given six penalty points, fined £125 and ordered to pay £45 costs and a £15 victims surcharge.
