Young people from Keighley who took part in the International Space Olympics have spoken of their "fantastic" experience.

Six youngsters from the Scout and Guide movements took part in the ten-day trip, to Korolev, in Russia. And last Thursday night the sextet gave a presentation to an audience of parents and other guests at Silsden Town Hall.

Following their talk and slide show, the youngsters - Young Leader Guides Naomi Whitwham, 14, Elizabeth Wade and Beth Meachin, both 15, and Explorer Scouts Peter Clarke, 14, Ace Cooper, 15, and Andrew Duval, 17 - were presented with certificates plus DVDs and diaries of their trip.

The group was among young people from across the world who took part in the annual Space Olympics, in October. There were months of preparation in the lead up to the event.

During the Olympics they gave a presentation to a distinguished panel of judges and sat exams in physics, maths and English.

They had the chance to meet Russian cosmonauts and space industry specialists.

There were also fun activities bringing the young participants together, a visit to the Russian mission control centre. "We had a really fantastic time," said Naomi. It was the fifth year that a contingent from Keighley had taken part in the event. The young people themselves fundraise for the trip but there is also invaluable support from local businesses and organisations. Bradford and District Children's University is among the main backers. Others include Orbit Research, JN Bentley, Link Telecom and Velocity. Any organisation interested in offering sponsorship or support in other ways can contact Mark Curtis, of the Children's University, on 01274 234611.
