A KEIGHLEY bus worker who battled against cancer was amongst the winners in an annual awards scheme.

Robert Brigg, of Keighley Bus Company, took the Engineer of the Year accolade in parent firm Transdev's Amazing Awards.

He says: "Last year was a 'different' one for me, when I found out I had cancer.

"Thankfully a brilliant medical team was on the case and I was operated on successfully inside two months.

"That took me out from work for a while, but all the time I was away the lads here made sure I wasn’t left behind. They kept in touch with text messages and when I came back, they were brilliant.

"Chemotherapy took a lot out of me, but they were very supportive and helped me get back up to speed as soon as I was ready.

"All of us are only as good as the team around us, and in Keighley our team is second to none."

In other successes for Keighley Bus Company, driver Tim Alway won the Lifetime Star Award for his contribution to the business over many years.

And the firm took the Depot of the Year title. Teams are assessed on a variety of factors including bus reliability, eco performance, engineering and route delivery, cost management and customer satisfaction.

Awards were presented by boxing legend Frank Bruno in a ceremony at the National Science and Media Museum in Bradford.

Finalists from across ten Transdev bus companies had been shortlisted for awards, in nine categories.

Alex Hornby, Transdev's chief executive officer, said: "The Amazing Awards again celebrated our team's incredible work and strong performance, showcasing its tremendous efforts in looking after customers and colleagues.

"We are proud to be seen as an industry leader, but that is only possible thanks to our 1,400-strong team of amazing people – forever our greatest assets. These awards helped to single out the best of the best on a very important and special evening for us all, and congratulations and thanks go out to our winners and finalists."

Master of ceremonies at the event was broadcaster and retired BBC Look North presenter, Harry Gration.

He said: "I really look forward to the Amazing Awards – it’s a fabulous event, and most of all a chance for all of us to salute genuine heroes. Throughout these most challenging times, you’ve all been there to provide an amazing service and a smile."
