A man who less than two years ago was homeless and sleeping on the streets is launching a pioneering business venture.

Ian Dennis is introducing a "green" boat, which will be available for hire, on the area's canals.

The 21-year-old, who now lives at Worth Village in Keighley, had the idea for the initiative while sleeping rough by the Leeds-Liverpool Canal at Bingley.

After raising the necessary funds, Ian now has the 70ft boat - which runs on bio-diesel fuel and solar power - ready to set sail. The craft can be hired by schools - for educational trips - and businesses and for private functions.

Ian, who also hopes to use the boat for charity events in aid of homeless charities, said: "The idea is something new - there's so much potential here to stimulate any imagination.

"In a world where we are conscious of our surroundings, the boat is environmentally friendly and fully customisable to people's every need."

The launch of the venture, Columbus Cruises, signals the culmination of a massive transformation in Keighley-born Ian's fortunes.

He was faced with isolation and rejection as he battled against substance addiction and spent several months on the streets.

He was helped by organisations including the Salvation Army and given a place in Bradford Foyer supported accommodation.

As his business idea grew, he attended a course for young would-be entrepreneurs - and ran comedy nights and music events across Yorkshire to raise funds.

He raised around £20,000, which - with grant aid - helped him achieve his dream. A boat was bought and renovated.

"This has given me a great sense of achievement and has made up for a lot of the lost time in my life," said Ian.

"At one time I couldn't have imagined I would be in this position."
