A new pool, snooker and table tennis club for disabled people will open in Keighley next week.

The venture, which is being set up by the Bradford Disability Sport and Leisure Association (BDSL), will be launched on Monday.

Its venue will be the Temple Row Centre.

The club will replace a previous pool and snooker group - the All Stars - which had to halt its activities after its centre was closed down.

Barry Thorne, of BDSL, pictured, said: "There has been some contact with a disabled group in Sheffield over the past few months which has been competitive - this has led to the setting up of the Keighley group.

"The Temple Row committee has kindly agreed to let us use its premises.

"The Bradford and Bingley agreed to provide a full competition pool table. This was a result of an appeal in the Keighley News.

"It's hoped that in future we might find some of the members who excel in the sports could take part in competitions such as the Special Olympics."

Paul Mitchell, community affairs manager at the Bradford and Bingley, said: "When our Community Action Team saw the article in the Keighley News it saw it was an excellent project to support and the purchase of the pool table would be a big help as it is not a cheap piece of equipment."

The club will run each Monday evening from 7-9pm. Mr Thorne said the group would be starting off with about 20 members.

If anyone is interested in sponsoring the club, or would like to volunteer to help run it, they can contact Mr Thorne on 01274 437093 or e-mail bsr1@btconnect.com.
