A Silsden-born man who served in the Far East during the Second World War, then later ran a family estate agents business, has died, as reported in last week's Keighley News.

Denis Knowles, 81 - who lived in Embsay - founded Knowles Estate Agents, based in Briggate, Silsden. He was also chairman of Silsden Civic Society.

He was called up for army service shortly after leaving school. He was posted to India and Burma during the conflict against Japan.

His son, Michael, said: "Although he would describe how awful, hot and sweaty the jungle areas were in Burma, he never once said that he encountered any enemy or fired in anger.

"He did say that there was a tremendous amount of marching with full kit, only to return back to the place where they had started."

On his return to England, Mr Knowles set up a wholesale paint and varnish company, supplying businesses across Yorkshire and Lancashire.

He met his future wife, Rene, through a friend, and the couple later enjoyed more than 50 years of marriage. They had one son and three daughters.

Mr Knowles first moved into the estate agent industry after being offered a business partnership by the late Harold Crane.

After Mr Crane's retirement, Mr Knowles continued to run the Silsden firm with his wife, then later with his son, Michael, and daughter, Jane.

Michael said: "He loved being involved with the business, meeting people and providing an in-depth knowledge of Silsden - the village he loved.

"One of his great passions was for books on history, local events and autobiographies, always seeking knowledge and information.

"He also loved travelling into the countryside and visiting gardens, being a member for many years of the National Trust."

Mr Knowles died on January 8 following a short illness.

His funeral service took place last Wednesday, at St James's Church, in Silsden.
