Keighley Social Centre for the Blind has been shut after high winds severely damaged a wall.

The top of the gable-end wall of the Scott Street building fell off during last night's gales.

Activities in the centre have been cancelled until the building is assessed by engineers.

Keighley and District Association for the Blind is talking to its insurers before beginning repairs.

The damaged wall is directly above the entrance, in a courtyard shared with Keighley Healthy Living Network.

Kevin Baldwin, the association's chief executive, said today that the area was being secured.

He said: "We're very fortunate. It's come down in the public entrance area when the building was not in use.

"The roof is still intact, we haven't lost any slates."

The social centre is used for meetings by association members and several other voluntary groups.

It also houses the association's Sight Centre with amenities including a library and braille transcription service.

Mr Baldwin said the association's offices - at the Albert Street end of the building - were still open.
