A CAMPAIGNING Silsden nanny has won recognition in a national awards scheme.

Maria Culley is amongst the finalists in the Family Children’s Champion Awards, which honour the achievements of early years professionals.

She is spearheading a campaign, The Route to Nanny Regulation, calling for regulation of the industry.

Maria – who has worked in the sector for over 15 years – says currently there is a "shocking" lack of regulation for nannies in private homes, putting both children and the nannies at risk.

Her call for action has won the backing of Keighley MP Robbie Moore.

Maria says: "Change is vital to safeguard and protect children.

"Since an original campaign was closed I have been promoting, listening to and understanding the needs of families, parents and nannies, including through correspondence with then-Education Minister Vicky Ford.

"Children’s safety must be paramount and the starting block for any form of regulation of the nanny industry."

Regarding the award, she added: "Receiving a nomination for the Family Children’s Champion accolade was amazing in itself, but to be a finalist is a huge honour."

Mr Moore said: "I fully support Maria's call for stronger regulations in the industry. I will continue to lobby ministers."
