Keighley's well-known Walking Man is being "sponsored" by a shoe manufacturer.

The man, a familiar figure on local roads for many years, has been awarded a £40 Clarks voucher.

He will be able to buy some new footwear - once organisers of the award track him down.

The Walking Man, also known as the Aire Valley Monk, has been walking around the district for more than 40 years.

This "Jesus Man", dressed distinctively like a monk, has a friendly wave for everyone he meets.

A website dedicated to the Monk on the Facebook social network has more than 9,000 members.

The Clarks voucher came about after former Keighley man David Butterfield wrote to the shoe firm.

He wanted to honour the Monk for the pleasure he had brought him during 45 years as a travelling salesman.

Mr Butterfield said: "I've seen him hundreds of times over the years on my journeys.

"I suggested him as a suitable candidate for sponsorship to mark his incredible mileage and on the way he quietly spreads happiness.

"He always has a smile for everyone. People give him a toot on their horn and there's always a wave for us."

Mr Butterfield, who recently moved to York, now wants to present the voucher to the Monk.

Anyone who can help track down the Walking Man can contact Mr Butterfield on 01759 301828 or email butterfield766@btinternet.com.

Clarks spokesman John Keery said: "It caught my imagination that this chap has been walking for so long and brings a smile to people's faces."
