A Cononley man has kept the village clock going by winding it more than 170,000 times over the past 40-plus years.

Brian Nelson, pictured, of Main Street, has been winding the clock on the Village Institute every Sunday since 1963.

Mr Nelson climbs a ladder into the clock tower and has to wind the clock 47 times for it to strike and a further 35 times for it to chime each week.

Mr Nelson, a retired joiner, has lived in Cononley all his life and has the perfect view of the clock from his home, which means he can see if it ever stops.

"It's only stopped a couple of times in all these years, it just keeps going and going," he said.
