SEVEN trees have been planted in the centre of Keighley.

Three blossom cherry and four wild cherry saplings have been sited in Highfield Lane as part of the Trees for Streets initiative.

Bradford Council joined the national scheme, run by urban tree charity Trees for Cities, last year.

A £10,000 grant, from the Green Recovery Challenge Fund, has been awarded to plant 40 trees across the district.

The council's trees and woodlands team has chosen locations, including Highfield, where there are currently relatively few trees.

Keighley Central district councillor, Zafar Ali, said: "I am delighted that Highfield Lane was selected for some of these new trees. They will greatly enhance the local area, providing much-needed greenery, and residents can enjoy watching them change with the seasons."

Planting will also be carried out at the Sue Belcher Centre, at Bracken Bank.

The Green Recovery Challenge Fund was developed by the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs, and its so-called arm's-length bodies. It is being delivered by the National Lottery Heritage Fund in partnership with Natural England, the Environment Agency and Forestry Commission.
